What Is Flexi Mold and How Does It Work?
Flexi Mold by Green Stuff World is an innovative, reusable molding material for creating one- or two-part molds. It offers a sustainable alternative to traditional silicone molds thanks to its ability to be melted and reshaped multiple times—making it cost-effective, eco-friendly, and biodegradable with no petroleum-based ingredients. Perfect for art, hobby, culinary use, and craft applications.
Key Benefits:
-
Flexible & Shape-Retaining
-
Food-Safe
-
Mistake-Friendly – simply remelt and retry
-
No Mixing Required – ready to use
-
Eco-Conscious – biodegradable and non-toxic
Basic Usage:
-
Heat: Use a microwave-safe container (e.g., original packaging) or double boiler.
-
Pour: Over the object or into a casting box.
-
Cool: Let it set at room temperature or refrigerate for faster results.
-
Reuse: Reheat and reuse up to 100 times or more!
How Many Times Can Flexi Mold Be Reused?
When properly used, Flexi Mold can be reused over 35 times, and with careful handling, even more than 100 times.
Tips for longer lifespan:
Cooling Times:
-
Small amounts (~300 ml): around 2 hours at room temp
-
Larger volumes may need more time
-
Speed up cooling in the fridge
Step-by-Step Use:
-
Melt: Use short microwave intervals (10–15 seconds) or a double boiler. Avoid long continuous heating to prevent burning.
-
Pour: Onto your object or into a casting frame.
-
Cool: Let it harden fully at room temp or refrigerate.
-
Reuse: Reheat, reshape, and cast again as needed.
Safe Melting Instructions:
Microwave:
-
300 ml (10 oz): 1–2 minutes total (check every 10–15 sec)
-
600 ml (20 oz): 3–5 minutes total
-
1200 ml (40 oz): 7–10 minutes total
Always stir and check frequently to prevent overheating.
Double Boiler:
-
Place in a container within a pot of hot water
-
Keeps temperature below 100 °C (212 °F)
-
Safer and more consistent melting
Compatible Casting Materials:
Flexi Mold works with a wide variety of casting mediums:
-
Gypsum, Plaster, and Acrylic Resin – great for art and decorations
-
Resins – use slow-curing epoxy/polyurethane for small items only
-
Chocolate & Confectionery – food-safe and certified for edible use
-
Candle & Soap Wax – pour cooled materials for best results
-
Polymer Clay – detailed shaping; cure in oven without the mold
Caution When Using Resin:
-
Only suitable for small castings due to resin’s heat output
-
Larger volumes can overheat and deform the mold
-
Temperature, resin type, and additives can affect curing
-
Always let resin projects cool completely before reuse
Cleaning & Maintenance:
-
Wipe with a cool, damp cloth
-
Do not soak in hot water
-
For embedded debris, reheat and strain through a mesh filter
-
Store in a cool, dry place to preserve quality
Temperature Guidelines:
-
Melting point: ~60 °C (140 °F)
-
Max safe heating temperature: 82 °C (180 °F)
-
For hot casting materials, chill mold first to avoid distortion
Can You Make Two-Part Molds?
Yes! Flexi Mold is ideal for two-part mold creation:
-
Embed object halfway in clay
-
Set up in casting frame and apply release agent
-
Pour first half and let fully cure
-
Remove clay, apply release agent to hardened half
-
Pour second half at lower temp (50–60 °C / 120–135 °F)
-
Let cure completely
This ensures clean seams and perfect alignment between both halves.
How to Minimize Bubbles:
-
Pour slowly and steadily
-
Use a vibrating surface to remove air pockets
-
Brush thin melted layer onto detailed areas first
-
Seal porous objects to avoid trapped air
Is Flexi Mold Pet-Safe or Edible?
Flexi Mold is non-toxic and made from food-safe materials. However, once used with materials like resin, plaster, or release agents, it is no longer suitable for food use.
Note: Some pet owners report dogs have eaten it with no issues. Still, if your pet shows symptoms, consult a vet immediately.
Important Safety Notes:
-
Flexi Mold is partially water-soluble
-
Do not cast water-based materials (e.g., plaster, acrylic resin) without a release agent
-
Recommended: Use sculptor’s Vaseline as a barrier (from Green Stuff World)
Once used with Vaseline, the mold is no longer food-safe. Remove residue thoroughly before reusing for non-food projects.
